Fiat Uno
This car was one of the best selling cars in India for a period of 7 - 8 years from about 1996 to 2004.In India this super-mini car was launched in
1996 making a partnership with PAL(Premier
Automobiles Limited) which proved to be its
greatest mistake as PAL delivered only 617
cars of the 30k ordered. Initially this car was a
huge success in India but Fiat's service was
not so effective due to which its sale
decreased .
This car had excellent engineering works put
into it making it the most sophisticated and
popular car on Indian roads during the late
nintees . This car had a 1 liter FIRE engine
with 45 horses running under it . Despite
being less powerful this car was an absolute
fun to drive and its handling was far better
than the cars of that time especially the M800
and the big and bulky HM Ambassador . It
was a sheer pleasure to drive and hence was
loved by its owners who were indeed very proud to own a FIAT Uno . This car was incredibly spacious and had a huge boot which cannot be matched by majority of the hatches even today ! This car also had a 5-speed gearbox which was something special at that time .
This car was hugely successful in Europe and had won the prestigious 'European Car of The Year' twice !
The Diesel version had a 1.7 liter engine with 58 bhp . This was perhaps the first diesel hatch in India and hence was immensely popular as a luxury taxi also . In fact one may still find a Uno diesel taxi in some parts of India !!
This car also had a 1.2 liter FIRE engine (petrol) introduced at a later stage .
Unfortunately this car was also involved in the notorious car crash that killed Princess Diana.
In short it was the best hatchback on the Indian roads at that point of time .
